Program Details #

Rust Event Support Grants are available to provide financial support for individuals, groups, and organizations to help cover the costs they incur in running events that support the Rust community. A budget of $15,000 USD per quarter has been allocated for Event Support Grants by the Rust Foundation.

Applications for Event Support Grants can be made at any time, though in exceptional circumstances we may suspend applications if our budget for the quarter has already been spent.

Applications can be made for grants from $100 to $500 USD. The types of expenses it is anticipated that the grants will be used to cover include:

The renting of event/meeting space
Travel costs
Refreshments
Swag
Online event platform costs

Applications for Event Grants can currently be made in English, Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese, reflecting our ambition to support a global community of events.

Can teams of people apply for an Event Support Grant? #

Yes, we welcome applications from teams of people and organizations.

Does it matter which country I live in or what my citizenship status is? #

No, but you (or your organization) must be able to legally receive funds from the USA to receive an Event Support grant.

I am 17, can I apply for an Event Support Grant? #

You have to be 18 or older on the date of your event. We need to be mindful of different countries’ child labor laws, and laws that mean people under the age of 18 can’t enter into legal contracts.

I am not currently a member of a Rust Project Team or Working Group, can I apply for an Event Support Grant? #

Yes.

I/my organization doesn’t have any experience with Rust, can I apply? #

Experience with running events – particularly events for open source communities – is more important than experience with Rust. But in order to demonstrate that your event will be a success, we'll expect you to show us how well you're connected to your local Rust users.

Do people have to adhere to a Code of Conduct to be awarded an Event Support Grant? #

Yes, you have to adhere to the Rust Foundation Code of Conduct.

Will I have to write a report about my event? #

Yes, you will have to provide a brief written report about your event, for publication on the Rust Foundation website.

Will I need to provide receipts? #

Yes, after the event you will need to provide a report showing how the grant was spent, with copies of receipts. If you don’t spend all of the grant money on your event, you will have to return the balance to the Foundation.

How will I get paid for my event? #

We typically pay via direct bank transfers.

Selection Process #

Event Support Grant applications will be reviewed and selected by the Rust Foundation staff team. Event Support Grants will not be subject to a point-based scoring system. Instead, there will be a lighter-touch process, reflecting the relatively low amounts being awarded under this program. The Rust Foundation staff team will make their decision based on:

The type of event being proposed
The number of people likely to benefit from the event
The amount of funding being sought
The accessibility of the event
The experience of the individual/team running the event
The location/languages of the event

We will aim to make a decision regarding an Event Support Grant within 10 working days of receiving an application.

We are keen to reflect the global diversity of the Rust community in our grant awards, and this information will help us achieve that. We can support events that are online-only.

If this is your first time running a Rust-related event you can still apply. If you have no experience of running Rust-related events, but have experience of running other events, please include this here.

We are keen for all of the events supported by the Rust Foundation to be as open and inclusive as possible. We would hope that all live events will be taking place in venues that are accessible to people with disabilities, and that your event will have a code of conduct.
